The lawsuits concerned Eli Lilly's failure to warn patients using Zyprexa that they were at an increased risk of developing glucose problems such as diabetes, hyperglycemia, and pancreatitis. Despite studies dating from as far back as the 1950s that link anti-psychotic drugs and diabetes, Eli Lilly has continued to market Zyprexa unabated, without including on the label what critics say is vital health information.

Physicians who prescribe Zyprexa should be aware of the potential complications. Before prescribing the drug, doctors should obtain the patient's complete medical history. While always important, this history should focus specifically on any family history of diabetes or other glucose-related conditions that could be exacerbated by Zyprexa use.

Patients taking Zyprexa who have experienced the onset or worsening of diabetes should consult their physician immediately to determine whether they should continue the drug's use.
