Juan Hernanadez, 24, was rushed to the hospital this morning after the incident that occurred while he worked in a foundation trench near the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers.

Construction workers had pulled the Bobcat loader off Hernandez with a chain by the time firefighters and paramedics arrived at 7:20, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Hernandez was listed in serious condition this morning at Lee Memorial Hospital.

According to police, the Bobcat had been backing up before wet ground underneath gave way and the machine slipped into the trench onto Hernandez.

Police said the Bobcat was being operated by Patrisio Garcia, 27, of Texas. Both men work for SDS Construction.

The accident will likely be investigated by OSHA, said police and the job site superintendent.
