The accident happened at about 4:15 a.m. on Sunday.

One of the four was identified by his mother as conductor Shannon Purvis, 21, of Puckett. The names of the other fatalities have not been released.

Firefighters worked late into the night to put out the burning wreckage, and put out the fire between 10:30 and 11 p.m., said a Sheriff's spokesman.

17 cars derailed in the collision, including two carrying grain, three empty grain cars, and seven residue cars.

Five of the residue cars were carrying liquefied petroleum gas, one isopropylamine gas, one carbamate pesticide, three full of soybeans and two carrying clay. None of the derailed cars leaked, a spokesman for Canadian National Railroads.

Investigation into the crash is ongoing.
