The jury found that Darion Connor was driving under the influence of alcohol early in the morning on Sept. 4 when his Toyota Land Cruiser hit Jonathon Conklin, 32.
At his sentencing, members of Connor's family, as well as his friends asked for leniency.
Connor also spoke at the sentencing, talking about his volunteer work and asking Conklin's family for forgiveness.
However, the judge presiding over his case said Connor's history of four previous drunk driving convictions led him to levy the maximum sentence of 15 years. His prior convictions all occurred between 1990 and 1993.
Connor's family and his attorney plan to appeal the conviction, saying Conklin was partially responsible because tests showed he was also intoxicated.
