A Rankin Inlet man was charged in connection with the accidental death of a seven-year-old boy last month.

The charges against Norman Ford relate to the unsafe storage of a firearm.

The seven-year-old boy was shot while he and a friend were playing with a gun at a cabin near the central Nunavut community.

The gun belonged to the owner of the cabin, police said. Police said the owner didn't take the necessary precautions to store the gun properly.

Police are asking all gun owners to lock up their guns and make sure they are safely stored to prevent more gun-related tragedies.

Ford will appear in court on August 15. If convicted, he could face jail time, a fine, or both.
