The study, which took place over nearly a decade and included over 2,900 California residents, concluded that the closer a subjects lived to natural deposits of asbestos, the higher the likelihood that they would suffer from mesothelioma.
California's natural asbestos deposits are located primarily in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and Coast Range mountains, a region in which population is expected to triple within the next 20 years.
The impact of this study is not limited to California, as naturally-occurring asbestos is known to exist in 40 US states. Researchers are hopeful that this information will be used to better plan development in the future, resulting in lower rates of mesothelioma.
