After rejecting an earlier offer of 3 million, a Limerick high court has approved a 4.5 million-settlement offer reached between the Mid-Western Health Board of Limerick and the parents of the child.
The lawsuit alleged that the boy, Paraic Comber, acquired cerebral palsy as a result of the circumstances of his 1993 birth at Limerick Maternity Hospital. Representatives of the child went on to claim that he suffered oxygen deprivation after hospital employees administered too much of the labor-inducing drug Syntocinon to the mother prior to delivery.
Representatives of the health board had admitted liability at the onset of the legal action for damages. The court was present only to judge damages in the case.
