Armstrong had died three days after being released from prison as a result of a head injury he sustained from being pushed by a jail guard. Armstrong's former wife had originally asked for $1 million in compensation for her son's loss of his father.

The head injury occurred after being pushed backwards by a guard who claims that it appeared Armstrong was rushing the cell door as food was being served to the cells. The State Medical Examiner concluded that Armstrong's death had been caused by the head trauma he received in jail. The examiner also reported that Armstrong's medical situation was worsened by poor heath caused by alcoholism.
