Parents of UK Boy With Cerebral Palsy Receive 4 Million Dollar Settlement

The case arose from circumstances surrounding the 1994 birth of the boy at a Portland Hospital in the UK. Though the case was settled before reaching a verdict, representatives of the family say their argument would have centered on Obstetrician Peter Cass's decision to forgo steroid treatment to the mother when she was admitted to the hospital. Lawyers would likely have argued that it was commonplace in 1994 to prescribe steroids in order to avoid the birth complications the boy suffered during delivery, and the doctor was negligent in failing to provide the treatment.

The claim has been settled without an admission of liability from the boy's obstetrician, though Mr. Cass has expressed sincere regret at the outcome of the situation.

Currently the boy is dependent on others for care. His parents have expressed relief that they will now have the funds to ensure proper long-term treatment and management of his cerebral palsy.
