In response to studies showing that the drugs increased women's chances of developing both breast and endometrial cancer, the WHO reclassified HRT drugs, including Prempro, Premarin, and estrogen-progestin oral contraceptives; they are now considered to be "possibly carcinogenic to humans," a classification previously bestowed on such substances as tobacco and asbestos.
In addition to cancer, estrogen- and progestin-based drugs have also been linked in the past to serious side effects, among them blood clots, stroke, heart attack and Alzheimer's disease.
Women who are concerned about the possible effects of Prempro, Premarin, or estrogen-progestin oral contraceptives are urged not to cease taking the drugs on their own. Rather, they should contact their medical provider to talk about the risks and discuss options for alternative hormone replacement therapy.
