On Oct. 15, 2003, the Andrew J. Barberi ferry, which carries more than 19 million passengers annually between Staten Island and lower Manhattan, crashed killing 11 people and injuring dozens. Hinkson, 41, in addition to seeking compensation for his injuries, is also seeking an award for assisting in the rescue of crewmembers and passengers. Hinkson alleges that he helped medical personnel in the rescue operation by removing debris and writing down names of the injured.

Maritime law does permit a life salvage award; however, the law usually has involved crews helping out other vessels in distress.

Maritime legal professionals are skeptical about Hinkson's ability to be successful in this portion of the lawsuit.
