Though most of the illnesses were not serious, their numbers have increased, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
During the time of the study, pesticide-related illness occurred in about seven out of every million children and 27 per million full-time school employees.
Sources of the pesticides on school grounds include chemicals to kill insects and weeds, disinfectants, and pesticides used on nearby farms.
Exposure to pesticides can lead to side effects such as skin problems, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
