In 2002, pesticides were used on more than 18,000 farms, a 23 percent decrease from five years earlier.
However, the total number of farms in New York also decreased during that time, from about 37,000 to around 36,000.
The counties that used the most chemicals on farms include Genesee, Ontario, Livingston, Wayne, and Chataqua.
