The high levels of dioxin were detected in dust samples that were taken from the schools in May.
Officials say the levels aren't extremely high, but fall within a range that warrants further study. They say the levels pose no immediate threat to students.
Prior to this finding, a group of current and former Nitro residents had already filed a lawsuit against the former Monsanto Co. plant, alleging that it released dioxins into the community's air, water, and land.
Recent studies of area homes have also revealed high dioxin levels, and health officials plan to look closely at these findings.
Exposure to dioxin can potentially lead to cancer, learning disabilities, endometriosis, birth defects, infertility, and immune system problems.
