According to a Pfizer spokeswoman, the SEC made the request during the second quarter. The company had no further comment other than to say that they were cooperating with the request.

Bextra and Celebrex are Cox-2 inhibitors that have been under investigation due to serious health risks. Bextra was pulled off of the market in April and the Food and Drug Administration has ordered stronger warnings on all Celebrex labels. Analysts say Bextra probably won't return to the market until further testing is done.

Pfizer officials also stated that the Internal Revenue Service has started an audit of the company's 2002 and 2003 tax returns.

Pfizer is the world's largest drug maker.
