U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor said that he thinks it is fair to characterize the incident as suspicious. He also stated that everyone is operating under the assumption that a crime possibly took place and reports of blood found on the ship further raised concerns.

George Smith IV was on a twelve-night honeymoon cruise when he disappeared somewhere between Greece and Turkey. He was reported as missing on July 5. Clete Hyman, a passenger on the cruise, reported hearing what sounded like a party going on in the Smith's cabin followed by loud arguing and a thud. Bloodstains were found outside of Smith's balcony along with a handprint on the side of the ship.

Smith's wife was allowed to leave Turkey, but investigators say she is cooperating with the investigation. Investigators are also continuing to interview passengers and crew members.
