Hancock County Deputy Loren Clarke was responding to a domestic disturbance call on June 28, 2004, in the town of Orland when the police car he was driving was struck on a Maine highway by a truck driven by Casey O'Donnell. Clarke's car spun out and rolled onto its roof. He suffered a fractured pelvis and missed several months' work.

Clarke's suit asks for compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional and physical injuries. It states he only recently returned to work as a substitute deputy, and that his injuries have caused his body to age prematurely.

O'Donnell, who was hospitalized along with Clarke after the accident, was charged with aggravated assault and reckless conduct and is awaiting tria.
