The compound 2,3,7,8 TCDD, also known as tetrachlorodibenzoparadioxin, is known to be harmful to humans. It was a component of Agent Orange, which has been linked to birth defects, cancer, and diabetes.
Nearly 2,000 residents have filed lawsuits against DuPont DeLisle, claiming that toxic waste from the plant has caused them a number of serious health problems. A trial is set to begin this week.
The DeLisle plant produces a pigment called titanium dioxide, which is less hazardous than TCDD. The TCDD was found after a judge allowed testing of the plant.
DuPont believes there is very little danger associated with the trace findings of TCDD and says it will continue to take safety precautions to protect its employees.
