The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) filed suit against the retail chain for illegally storing pesticides and fertilizer outside, enabling it to be carried into local waters during heavy rains. Some stores were also accused of operating without proper wastewater permits and selling sewer additives that are illegal in Connecticut.
The retail giant agreed to pay $600,000 in civil penalties and $550,000 to help address storm water issues and fund environmental projects.
The DEP says that retail outlets commonly store pesticides and fertilizer incorrectly.
Wal-Mart says it has implemented new rules to ensure that its stores will comply to storm water policies in the future.
