According to testimony at his trial, Mark Schoger, 42, spent hours smoking crack cocaine and drinking alcohol prior to an accident he caused after running a red light.

Schoger's car crashed into Gregory Vasich's vehicle, killing Vasich.

Schoger then left the scene of the accident, leaving both Vasich and the other passenger in his vehicle.

During the sentencing portion of the trial, prosecutors cited Schoger's previous record, which includes a prior DUI arrest and current probation for possession of a controlled substance.

Schoger's supporters asked the judge for mercy, saying he had been undergoing drug rehabilitation while he was in jail waiting for his trial to begin.

However, the judge decided on an 18-year sentence for charges of driving under the influence, reckless homicide, and leaving the scene of the accident.
