After an explosion occurred at the Detroit area plant, more than 3,000 residents were evacuated and were unable to return to their homes for several days as fires continued to burn at the site. The source of the explosion was not immediately known.

Now, residents are concerned about air and water contamination and the related health risks. A thick layer of dust covered homes and belongings, and the Environmental Protection Agency was conducting tests to determine if the levels of dioxins or other hazardous chemicals were above average in the area.

Some individuals have already complained of chest tightness, skin rashes, and a burning sensation in the eyes, nose, and throat. More serious health problems from chemical exposure can take years to develop.

The plant is operated by EQ Resource Recovery Inc. A spokesperson for the company stated that the lawsuit seemed premature and noted that they have an excellent safety record.
