The family filed the lawsuit Monday in Cook County, alleging Glendale-Heights-based Dunnet Bay Construction Co. was negligent, causing the collapse that killed Daniel Lopez, 33, of Munster, Ind.

The Lopez family's attorney, Louis Cairo, citing the collapse of 240 tons of steel girders in the accident, said there was clearly a failure somewhere.

Lopez was one of seven ironworkers installing a section of ramp on Illinois 394 in Lansing when the mishap occurred. He was on a temporary steel structure used to support several girders during the collapse, said an Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman.
