A jury found the DuPont DeLisle plant at fault for Glen Strong's multiple myeloma. They awarded Strong's wife $1.5 million for loss of "love and companionship" and have yet to decide on punitive damages.
DuPont DeLisle produces a product called titanium dioxide. One worker testified that clouds of dust are constantly emitted from the plant.
Strong's attorneys argued that hazardous dioxins from the plant entered their client's body through the air and by eating oysters harvested from a local bay.
Officials from DuPont say there is no connection between their plant operations and adverse health effects. They say they plan to appeal.
This lawsuit was the first of nearly 2,000 that have been filed against the plant. All of the plaintiffs claim that dioxins emitted from the plant are responsible for their serious health problems.
