On Sept. 1, the boyfriend's parents filed a $10 million lawsuit against former beauty queen Sharron Nicole Redmond for killing their son, Kevin Darnell Shorter.

Just four months after being crowned Miss Savannah, Redmond confronted her boyfriend at the house of another woman in December 2003. Shorter had been dating both Redmond and another woman, Rachel Hall, for three years. And he had given both women engagement rings.

During the trial, Redmond said she acted in self-defense when she shot her boyfriend. She said he was acting abusive. Jurors believed her, acquitting her of murder charges in March of this year.

Shorter's parents said their son was never violent or abusive, calling him "a gentle giant."

Redmond plans to file a countersuit seeking damages for the "torturous acts" Kevin Shorter committed when he assaulted Redmond.
