The patient, Judit Perez, died while being treated at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in May of 1993. She was suffering from an infestation of pork tapeworm, and had complained of severe head pain when she visited the hospital. The lawsuit alleged that doctors had failed to treat her condition in a timely manner. Perez's family maintained that doctors should have operated sooner in order to alleviate the swelling in her brain, which eventually caused her death.

According to a memo submitted to the County Board of Supervisors, the failure to operate in a timely manner fell below the proper standard of care. After fighting the lawsuit for several years, the County of Los Angeles has agreed to pay the family $199,000.
