Some 440,000 fake pills were seized from three cities, including the port city of Tanjin, by Chinese authorities. The fake drugs included counterfeit versions of Viagra, Levitra, Cialis and Lipitor.

The investigation into the counterfeit medication scheme started in September 2004 when Pfizer, Inc. told Chinese police that Li Wenhui, one of the men who ran the scheme, was selling counterfeit Viagra by mail to both the United States and Britain. Wenhui operated under the fake name Wang Daijun and served as the main supplier to Richard Cowley, the American involved in the plot.
