Expressing terrorism concerns, Mayor Daley ordered the demolition of Meigs Field and the late-night bulldozing of the runway began on March 30, 2003. The fine of $33,000 translates into $1,100 per day for each day the city did not give notice. The FAA is also investigating allegations that $1.5 million was improperly diverted to pay for the demolition.

The city has a 15-day grace period to request a hearing before an administrative law judge. If the request is not made within 15 days, the city must pay the fine. A spokesperson for the City Law Department stated that the city has not decided if it will pay the fine or request a hearing.

The airport is now a park and concert venue.
