In September of 2002, Breann Renee Vanden Bos, who was 17-years-old at the time, visited the salon to get her hair done before having her senior pictures taken. In an attempt to highlight the teen's hair, the salon colorist applied the appropriate chemicals to Vanden Bro's hair with foils and then left her under heat lamps to assist the lightening process. While waiting under the lamps, Vanden Bros felt her scalp burning and began to scream and cry in pain. Once the chemicals were rinsed from her hair, Vanden Bro was left with a 4-inch-long, third-degree burn on the top of her head. The burn was so severe that it required her to undergo two surgeries in the hospital burn unit.

The Gene Juarez Salon has offered to settle with Vanden Bro for an undisclosed amount, which was rejected. The salon claims that the amount offered in the settlement was reasonable and sizeable and that the monetary demands of the recent suit are unreasonable.
