The McKays are charged with conspiracy to rig union elections in 1993 and 1996 by stuffing ballot boxes and destroying ballots. Additional charges include embezzlement of union money from accounts and benefit plans for hockey tickets and personal boat repairs. They were also accused of using free union housing, which is reserved for union business, for themselves and family members.
The McKay brothers pleaded not guilty and their attorney, Neal Sonnett, said that his clients look forward to proving their innocence in court. They were released on $500,000 bond. The other two defendants have not yet made court appearances or entered pleas.
The government is also seeking forfeiture of more than $528,000 from the defendants.
