Ryan lived less than 500 feet away from the former Amaco oil refinery for four years in the 1950s. After she died in November, her family brought the lawsuit against BP Amaco, alleging that benzene in the ground and surface water near the Sugar Creek home came from the refinery and caused her illness.
The attorney representing the family is planning on filing more than 20 other suits against BP Amaco, all from people who are now suffering from lymphoma or leukemia due to chemicals that they say leaked from BP Amaco refineries.
BP Amaco representatives deny any wrongdoing and presented arguments that there was not sufficient scientific evidence to link the woman's illness to substances from the refinery. They are expected to appeal the case.
