According to the lawsuit, Christian, 37, was dragged outside the club and repeatedly kicked and beaten in the head after he declined to tip a stripper who had performed two lap dances for him. The physical trauma he sustained during the beating reversed years of therapy that he had undergone to improve his mobility, speech, and other basic abilities after a terrible motorcycle accident left him irreversibly brain damaged. Criminal charges were brought against three of the four bouncers involved. Only one was found guilty of third-degree assault and was required to serve four months in jail.

Christian's family has filed a civil lawsuit against Dèjá Vu alleging negligence in the training, hiring, and supervision of the bouncers. The suit also charges that the bouncers, David W. Ford, Kevin D. Ford, Roger D. James and Marlon B. Walker wrongfully assaulted and imprisoned Christian. The Christian family is seeking unspecified damages to assist with medical costs and continued therapies for Michael's brain damage.
