Dr. Jackie Ray Springer and Gregory Chollet ran Weight Control, Inc., the Overland Park clinic that imported the fenfluramine. According to U.S. Attorney Todd Graves, Springer and Chollet worked with a company in London to import the drug from late 1999 to early 2001.

Chollet pled guilty to illegally importing fenfluramine and faces up to seven years in prison without parole. He also faces a fine that could amount to $500,000. Springer, who had her Kansas medical license revoked, waived the right to a jury trial and agreed to an offer by prosecutors for a pretrial diversion.

In March 1999, the Food and Drug Administration banned fenfluramine from the U.S. market after it was determined to be unsafe.
