Central Admixture Pharmacy Services Inc. manufactures cardioplegia solution, which is used to stop the beating heart during surgery.

The Maryland based company voluntarily recalled 18 types of cardioplegia solution and 11 other types of injectable drugs over the contamination concerns.

The problem was first noticed after three bypass patients at Mary Washington Hospital in Virginia became seriously ill. One patient later died, while the others required lengthy stays before being released from the hospital.

In a letter to consumers posted on the FDA website, Admixture stated that the recalled products should be immediately quarantined to avoid life-threatening injuries or death.

The company supplies its products to hospitals in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and Washington, D.C.
