The case resulted from a qui tam lawsuit brought by Safina Office products and two of its executives. The whistleblowers will receive a total of $712,500 of the award.

Under the False Claims Act, individuals or organizations that file a lawsuit on behalf of the government are eligible for a part of the award.

According to Office Depot's contract, the company is not allowed to sell products manufactured in countries that do not have reciprocal trade agreements with the United States to U.S. government agencies.

A $9.8 million settlement was recently reached with Office Max, stemming from the same claims.
