Liggin a long-time boxer who had at one time come close to fighting in the Olympics, sustained severe head injuries during a fight in the "Toughman" boxing contest. His mother Lela Liggens blames the fight promoter for her son's death, arguing that her son was not provided adequate medical care upon his injury.

Art Dore, promoter of the "Toughman" contest, maintains that Liggin was assisted by a physician immediately and denies any responsibility for the death. Dore also has a binding medical release signed by Art Liggens before the contest, which releases Dore and the "Toughman" competition from any responsibility in the event of an injury or death. Upon review of the release, the court dismissed Lela Liggen's lawsuit, as Dore could not legally be held liable for Art Liggen's death.
