The 2003 explosion was caused by a natural gas leak in systems managed by Ameren I-P (then named Illinois Power Company). The suit alleges negligence on the part of the utility for failing to properly maintain and test its natural gas systems.

The family is seeking compensation for the wrongful death of 7-week-old Tanner, as well as property damage, burns and other personal injuries sustained by the rest of the family
