An appeals court had said that the District of Columbia government and individual gun victims could sue gun makers under a D.C. law that says manufacturers can be held liable for violence from assault weapons.
The Supreme Court had been asked to use the case to strike down the statute.
A new federal law could still throw out the case. In July the Senate voted to shield firearms manufacturers, dealers and importers from lawsuits by victims of gun crimes. The bill is pending in the house.
The District of Columbia has strict gun possession rules, and judges had been told that its law interfered with gun commerce in other states. They had been urged to rule with gun makers by twelve states.
