Jury Awards $4.75 in Whistleblower Case

Michael Walters was fired from his job working as an environmental analyst for the county in 1996 after discovering fraudulent activity had taken place.

Walters informed the county's chief financial officer that false liability figures had been reported to underwriters and other officials.

Shortly thereafter, Walters was fired from his job.

Under the Whistleblower Protection Act, any person or organizations that notify authorities when the government is being defrauded is eligible for part of the damages.

The jury award compensates Walters for lost and future wages, suffering, and defamation.

Maricopa County officials had no comment.
