Police investigators believe that a welding torch may have sparked the blast, which collapsed part of the second floor of the plant and blew a hole through the roof. Only contractors were inside the building at the time of the explosion, as the "soft opening" was planned for the 1st of November.

Two of the blast victims were rescued from beneath the rubble from a collapsed concrete wall and others were thrown from the building. Of the fourteen injured, three are listed in critical condition and six in fair condition. The $130 million facility was set to employ 1,000 people and revitalize the St Joseph area. This explosion could be a large setback for Triumph Foods', which is owned by several hog producers in the Midwest.
