Harriet Meirs Supported Asbestos Lawsuit Reform

On multiple occasions Ms. Meirs has argued in support of an asbestos compensation fund, also supported by leaders of the Senate committee. Meirs stated that the Bush administration believed the three most critical components of asbestos reform include, ensuring payments are directed to those who are truly ill, claimants who are ill should have their payments expedited, and there would need to be a certainty in the system to deal with asbestos claims to help "save jobs and protect businesses that had nothing to do with creating the asbestos problem."
Many businesses have been pushed into bankruptcy due to the large numbers of asbestos injury claims. Businesses, and manufacturers have used asbestos for decades. Asbestos fibers are linked to cancer and other serious diseases.
Confirmation hearings for Ms. Meirs will begin soon.
