The House passed the bill 283-144. The bill's supporters, including the NRA, claimed it crucial to protect the industry from being bankrupted by lawsuits. Opponents called the bill's passage proof of the gun lobby's power over congress.

Following the adoption of the measure, a half dozen pending lawsuits by local governments against gun manufacturers would be dismissed.

The bill's authors say that the law would still allow civil suits against individuals found guilty of criminal wrongdoing by the courts.
