Mansour Fadaie alleged that his former employer, Alaska Airlines, unlawfully terminated him when he questioned aircraft safety on Flight 261, which crashed just off the coast of California in January 2000. Fadaie stated that the carrier failed to finish government-requested tool inspections on the aircraft. Fadaie refused to sign documents claiming that the airline had completed the inspection.
The National Transportation Safety Board stated that lack of grease had interfered with a tail component on the MD 80 aircraft.
The settlement was resolved for an undisclosed amount and included an apology from Alaska Airlines for the 2003 termination. The agreement prohibits Fadaie from discussing details of the case.
