Nursing Home Reaches Settlement in Wrongful Death Case

The lawsuit was filed on account of the death of Francis Chiddix, 65, who resided at Prairie House Living Center. According to the lawsuit, Chiddix suffered from dementia, which occasionally made it difficult for her to swallow her food. In March 2003, she choked to death on a piece of meat at the nursing facility.

Previous to this, she had choked on a piece of food while she was away from the center on a pass, the lawsuit stated.

Although the nursing home agreed to the settlement, the records indicate that no acceptance of culpability for Chiddix's death was made on behalf of Prairie House Living Center or J.B. Roberts and Paul Johnson, who were board directors when the incident occurred and were also named as defendants in the lawsuit.
