Ford Motor Company has issued three recall orders in the past two days, affecting a total of 455,000 sport utility vehicles, pickups, vans, and sedans with potential safety problems.
A recall issued today includes about 235,000 2006 pickups, vans, and SUV's that might suffer windshield wiper motor failure because grease may not have been applied to a motor shaft during manufacture.
Yesterday's recalls include about 98,000 2005 luxury sedans in which a battery cable may rub against the frame, creating a fire hazard, and more than 123,000 vehicles on which a strap supporting the fuel tank might break after about 100,000 miles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the lack of grease in the 2006 windshield wiper motors could lead to a broken gear and a loss of wiper function, creating the potential for a crash in adverse weather conditions. Models affected include Ford E-150, E-250, E-350 and E-450 vans, Ford Escape, Expedition, and Explorer SUVs, Mercury Mountaineer and Mariner SUVs, the Lincoln Navigator SUV, Ford F-150 and Ranger pickups, the Lincoln Mark LT pickup, and the Ford Taurus sedan.
The broken battery cable recall affects the 2005 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, or Lincoln Town Car sedans. Four fires related to the problem have been reported to date.
The fuel tank strap recall affects more than 123,000 Ford Freestyle crossover vehicles, Ford Five Hundred sedans and Mercury Montego vehicles.
