A judge has denied a request by the Metropolitan Airports Commission and Northwest Airlines to dismiss a noise lawsuit filed by three cities.
The lawsuit was filed by the cities of Minneapolis, Richfield and Eagan. The suit requests noise-proofing packages for residents in the 60-64 decibel level. The suit requests that residents receive insulation that would reduce the noise level by at least 5 decibels. Officials for MAC stated that, while the commission promised to address the noise issue for these homeowners, they never promised to cover insulation and air conditioning costs.
The cost for the proposed package is $45,000 per household. There are 165 homes in the 65-decibel level range in the three cities.
Exposure to decibel levels of 90 and higher can result in hearing loss. During takeoff, a jet airplane can generate decibel levels as high as 180.
