The drugs shown to have this effect on patients all fall within the so-called "atypical" group of antipsychotics, including Zyprexa (olanzapine), Risperdal (risperidone), Clozaril (clozapine,) Seroquel (quetiapine), and Geodon (ziprasadone).
The study, conducted over a two-year period, led researchers to determine that the antipsychotic drugs caused hyperglycemia in up to 30 percent of subjects.
Hyperglycemia can cause several health problems over time, affecting the kidneys, eyes, heart, and nervous system. These effects are worsened by chronic diseases such as diabetes.
Researchers believe that the results of this latest study are an indication that more frequent screening for hyperglycemia needs to be conducted for patients who are taking the antipsychotic medications.
If you are currently taking Zyprexa, Risperdal, Clozaril, or a similar drug, and you are concerned about the risk of developing hyperglycemia, you should contact your medical provider to discuss your options.
