The complaint was initially filed by five whistleblowers who had family members who were residents at the Lawrenceville facility.
Under qui tam law, an individual or group that files a lawsuit against those who use government funds inappropriately is entitled to a portion of the settlement or verdict.
Of the $2.5 million, the three whistleblowers who originally filed the complaint and remained parties in the suit will receive a total amount of $400,000 under the False Claims Act.
The United States will receive $1,092,000 for damages relating to the Medicare program and $604,800 for damages to the Medicaid program. The state of Georgia will receive $403,200.
The suit claimed that the nursing home failed to provide adequate care to residents, resulting in an early death for many residents. It also alleged that the poor care provided at the facility was due to improper training, understaffing, high turnover, bad management, insufficient funds, and poor documentation.
Additionally, the lawsuit claimed that violations of the False Claims Act took place because residents were billed for services that were either not provided or did not meet standards of care.
