The new law requires that individuals convicted of drunk driving wear an orange vest with the words "I am a drunk driver" written in big letters. The vest must be worn while the individuals perform community service and pick up litter on the side of the road. The service must be completed during a series of three eight-hour shifts performed within a month of conviction. In addition, first time offenders must pay a $1500 fine, spend 24 hours in jail, and will have their driver's license suspended for one year.
About 500 individuals are convicted of drunk driving in Tennessee each year and most are first time offenses.
