The Nashville, Tennessee man, 21-year-old Patrick Lee, died last September. He received several shocks administered by two police officers armed with Taser stun guns. Mr. Lee's parents are suing the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department and the gun manufacturer, Taser International, for wrongful death.
The lawsuit, filed in Davidson County Court, alleges that the police department acted negligently in its training and supervision of the officers. Additionally, it claims that Arizona-based Taser failed to adequately warn users of the dangers of its product.
The city's medical examiner ruled that Lee's death was caused by a drug-induced state of physical agitation, but could not rule out that the Taser was a contributing factor.
Taser has been named a defendant in more than 30 federal lawsuits in the past year.
