The young victim was attending a Girl Scout meeting at a suburban home in Lawrenceville, Georgia. She reports that as she was playing on the trampoline, she saw the dog jump over the fence and run towards her. She tried to run into the house to safety, but was not fast enough. The girl sustained several bites on her arm, in addition to five on her lower back.
Bomb-sniffing dogs are kept at the home of their human handlers, rather than at the police station. According to the dog's owner, these trained animals are taught to locate explosive materials and alert police to their presence; aggressive behavior and biting are not part of the training regimen.
The dog has been impounded pending further investigation into the matter. The police officer who handles the dog was cited with failure to restrain the animal and public nuisance/attacks without provocation, both misdemeanors.
